Enter the Ice Cream Cupcake Contest 2012

Wow, we can't believe it's already time for the 5th Annual Scoopalicious/Cupcake Project Ice Cream Cupcake Contest!

Since we've done this for the last four years, the best way to get an idea of what an ice cream cupcake is, is to look back at previous entries.

We've got some great prizes and some great judges this year, so get crackin' and enter by June 30, 2012.

Since Stef at Cupcake Project wrote such a wonderful post with all the information about this event, we are going to send you over there for contest and entry details.

YoCake...Froyo & Cupcake Become One

What a novel idea! We've done it here with Cupcake Project, that is combining ice cream and cupcakes into yummy creations (if you haven't heard about our annual Ice Cream Cupcake Contest check it out here) and now there is a storefront in the Washington DC area, YOCAKE, that dishes out froyo and cupcake combinations in one tasty cup. Plus you can add toppings like a sundae. Seriously....sounds like road trip time! Unfortunately we haven't actually been there yet but hopefully someday we will because it sounds just fun to go to. Lots of Froyo flavors both sweet and tart options and so many cupcakes to choose from.

Apparently the only catastrophe is that they make beautiful cupcakes and then you cover them in froyo. I feel bad for the baker who spent all that time designing them. As this Washington Post article states, "In some ways, I’m surprised a shop that produces such elegant little cakes would allow you to drown them in nonfat yogurt. It’s like covering a wedding cake in a mountain of ice cream just to save the catering crew some time. But such is the price of dealing in forced gimmicks: Someone or something is always compromised, this time it’s those carefully constructed and decorated cakes produced in Ellen’s kitchen (based on recipes from her mother, a French-trained baker). I guess in the end it's the taste so who really cares right and it sounds like Ellen's mom made some good cupcakes so I bet they are awesome.

If you've ever been we'd love to hear from you.

For those who haven't been stalking the judges' blogs to see who they voted for in the 2011 Ice Cream Cupcake Contest, here are the links to to the posts with their votes: Baking Bites, Bakers Royale, and Cakespy.

As a testament to how incredible our entries were this year (check them all out if you haven't yet), there was no entry that was unanimously selected by all three judges.  However, you'll notice that the S’mores Cupcake Ice Cream Sandwiches by Stephanie of 52 Kitchen Adventures as well as the Honey Hazelnut Cupcake with Gianduja Gelato by Vivian of Vivian Macaron each received votes from Nicole (Baking Bites) and Naomi (Bakers Royale) - making them the strongest contenders.  Since Jessie (Cakespy) didn't choose either of them, we decided that she should have the tie-breaking vote to determine the contest winner.

Jessie will be announcing her tie-breaking vote for the grand prize 2011 Ice Cream Cupcake Contest winner tomorrow on Cakespy!  I'll update this post when she does (or if you are Stephanie or Vivian, you can check her blog nonstop with bated breath).  Good luck to Stephanie and Vivian and thanks again to our judges and everyone who participated.

Let's take one more quick look at what either Stephanie or Vivian will have on their bookshelf in the near future:

60 Ice Cream Cupcake Contest Entries...WOW!

Was it the promise of winning a collection of cookbooks, could it be a sign of the increasing popularity of cupcakes (don't listen to those all-hype media stories about cupcakes being on the way out), or perhaps it was the excitement about this year's fabulous blogger judges Nicole Weston from Baking Bites, Jessie Oleson from CakeSpy, and Naomi Robinson from Bakers Royale? Whatever the reason, we at Scoopalicious along with Stef at Cupcake Project received 60 ice cream cupcake contest entries (double the number we received last year)! As usual, the entries were well thought out, hunger-inducing, and visually appealing.

Click here to view each entry if you are not seeing them below. Sorry for the confusion!

Below, you will find each entry along with a brief description and a link to either the blog post about the entry or the Facebook page where the entrant provided the recipe.  If you've got some time (hours), check them all out now!  Otherwise, we encourage you to bookmark this page and return for inspiration the next time you want a unique and icy cool cupcake.

A note to our entrants:  The judges are working on selecting their favorites now and they will decide upon a winner by the end of the month.

Prizes

This year's winner will receive a whole library of baking cookbooks!!  For the complete list of prizes, see the end of this post.

Judges

This year, we are doing things a bit differently.  We've asked three of our favorite dessert bloggers to help us judge the contest.  If you have not checked out these amazing blogs, now is a good time to head over there, try to figure out what flavors they like and don't like browse their recipes, and leave bribes say, "Hi!"
Each of these judges will be writing a post on their own blogs about their top three ice cream cupcakes - giving you a chance for your cupcake and your blog to get even more exposure!

Official Rules:
  • Dates: You can enter any time through June 15, 2011.
  • How to Enter:
  1. Create a recipe for ice cream cupcakes! The ice cream cupcakes must contain cake and ice cream (or frozen yogurt, gelato, or something ice cream-like). Cupcakes baked in ice cream cones without a frozen element are not eligible.
  2. Write a post on your blog about your creation any time prior to June 15. The post must include a photo, a recipe, and a link to both this post and the post at Cupcake Project. If you don't have a blog, you can still enter (you'll find details on the entry form), but why not start one?
  3. Post a photo of your cupcake to the Cupcake Project Facebook Wall. Please upload as large a photo as possible so that we can be sure to best showcase it in the roundup post. Please include the title of your cupcake and a link to your post in the photo caption.
  4. Complete the entry form
  • Number of Entries per Person: Sorry, we are allowing just one entry per person this year - so make it count!
  • International Entrants:  International readers are welcome to enter, but prizes can not be shipped internationally. Winners Announced for the Cupcake Project/Scoopalicious Ice Cream Cupcake Roundup 2009!

I just want to begin by again thanking everyone for participating in the 2009 Ice Cream Cupcake Roundup - our 35 bakers, 650 voters, and 8 prize donors! We are so excited with all of the participation!

If you won a prize, please email stef at cupcakeproject dot com with your mailing address and phone number within the next week.

Without further ado, I present you with the winners:

    Reader's Choice Award

This prize goes to the cupcake that received the most reader votes. It was a close competition, but the winner was Carrot Cake Ice Cream Cupcakes from Little Big Cakes.

People had some great things to say about these cupcakes; here are some highlights:
    • I really like carrot cake and this one looks perfect!
    • After a lot of scrolling and wiping the drool from my mouth, I was finally able to narrow it down to this one and the Vegan Piña Colada Ice Cream Cupcakes from Cookies and Candids. There were a lot that I loved that were yummy looking as desserts. But part of the appeal of cupcakes, for me anyway, is the instant satisfaction. No cutting, no dishes, no utensils, just peel and eat. The carrot cake seems like it would have a lot of flavor yet is still simple to eat.
    • Carrot cake with pecan ice cream sounds awesome! Simple, but great.
    • Are you kidding? Do you really have to ask? Just bite into a cake from Little Big Cakes! I can just look at the picture & smell it... makes my mouth water.
    • Great flavor combo and the picture was really appealing.
    • It's simple, and classic, but with a twist. I love that it's not over thought, and the finished product still looks clean and delicious!
    • It is the one I would most like to make, some others were so beyond my cooking abilities.
    • I love carrot cake and this cupcake has all the best elements of carrot cake in a neat little cupcake!
    • Because the cake may be 'little' but the taste is 'big'!
    • Mmm scrumdiddlyumptious!
    • I loved how neat and perfect looking it looks (like a fancy Reese's) - plus Carrot Cake & Cream Cheese icing is one of my favorites.
    • Can't go past carrot cake!! I am sitting here eating my low fat yogurt but dreaming it tastes like carrot cake ice cream cupcakes!!!
    • It's a simple, traditional flavor. And not too flashy or over the top. Less is more! I would love to buy dozens of these!!!

Prize: 12 pack of gourmet cupcake wrappers from Bella Cupcake Couture.

    Editor's Choice -- Cupcake Project

Stef chose Fragola Tiramisu olio d'oliva Gelato Tortatina (Strawberry Tiramisu Olive Oil Gelato Cupcake) from Little Ivy Cakes as Cupcake Project's Editor's Choice. To find out why, head over to her blog!

Prize: Cupcake tote bag from Avocado Creations.

    Editor's Choice - Scoopalicious

Selecting Editor's Choice was no easy feat. We wanted to choose them all. In fact, after seeing ALL the amazing entries, Stef, Tina and I even suggested getting rid of Editor's Choice and only having Reader's Choice. We knew we couldn't actually get rid of the Editor's Choice since it was part of the roundup, but we really all had a very hard time. In the end we selected Chocolate Raspberry Baby Cupcakes from Inspired Creations.

There was much to love about these cupcakes. First of all, the size was unique...it seemed to me they would be neater to eat than your average ice cream cupcake. (Though in all honesty, isn't part of the fun of eating sweets is that it is ok to be messy?!) Also, the size allowed for one to eat more without feeling as guilty...I know, I know, it's all relative. Best of all, you get all flavors in one bite without fail. What's nice about this is that it is the perfect number of flavors combined, so the combo, while rich, is just right. I also imagine that the mini-ness of the cupcakes allows for the fresh berry not to get lost among the richness, creating a nice balance of flavor.

The flavor combo itself was just wonderful. Chocolate and raspberry is a match made in heaven. The combo is also reminiscent of a childhood favorite of both of us: black raspberry ice cream with chocolate sprinkles. This is kind of the "grown up" version.

Though the ice cream was not homemade, I didn't have a problem with this, especially since it was local and looked wonderful piled high in those containers.I like the fairly simpleness of this recipe, so that we can make it at home. I also think the recipe would allow for nice variations...as I sit here getting sick by overdosing on fresh cherries, I picture a cherry-vary...On that note, the presentation was good, and I loved the step-by-step writing so we can all make them at home. A recipe is not as fun or enticing without pictures (even though I am horrible at remembering to take pictures along the way) so that was an added bonus, and to me especially, quite impressive!

I could go on and on, but honestly, I am pratically jumping off my chair to go make them as I write this.

Prize: 12 pack of gourmet cupcake wrappers from Bella Cupcake Couture.

    Entry Prizes

All of the remaining prizes were chosen using a random number generator (Random.org). We tried whenever possible to give out one of the top three choices selected by the participants.
