Red, White, and Blue Ice Cream Treats!

If you're like me, you are off to a Fourth of July dinnertime picnic and you still haven't made dessert. And it's hot!

No worries! Here's a list of recipes that look pretty promising! Some are quick and easy, others you might want to start thinking about for next years' Fourth. On the otherhand, this Red, White, and Blue Ice Cream Floats recipe is a quick trip to the store on the way to your party and the rehearsed: "Sorry I couldn't assemble these in advance, but you know, it's ice cream and it would melt..." You are all set!

Churn Up Some Red, White and Blue

Election Day 2004, I headed to the nearest convenience store in the North End and found a carton of fabulous red, white, and blue ice cream. I think it was this no name brand and probably fake fake fake, but I really liked it. I have never found it since.

I guess we are on our own to fulfill our red, white and blue needs this year BUT judging from what I found below, I think this recipe will leave me having had forgotten that carton of fake ice cream.

A google search brought up this fabulous cake, its only downfall being it's not great for July fourth picnics because it can't just sit out on the picnic table.

The photo at left (taken by Zoe Singer for Epicurious) says it best -- um, yum! Layers of blueberry and strawberry sorbet and lemon ice cream separated by chocolate cookie crumbs (or candied ginger, but not being a ginger fan myself and loving chocolate cookies, I have to ask why would you do the ginger?!), and topped with fresh, local fruit, this cake is not only gorgeous to look at, but looks amazing to eat.

The recipe was created by Gabrielle Carbone of The Bent Spoon (Artisan Ice Cream and Good Ingredient Bakery) in Princeton, New Jersey. Um, I need to go there!

Head over to Epicurious for a great article about The Bent Spoon, its owners, their love of local (and for that alone we love them!), the recipe for this cake (including separate recipes for each of the ice cream/sorbet flavors), and Carbone's ingredient secrets (with a great little blurb about making creamy ice cream).

I know I can't make this for the Fourth of July picnic I am attending, but I do think I will be trying this one out sometime soon!

Celebrate the Fourth With Red, White, and Blue!

A couple of days ago, Edy's® posted their new flavor: Red, White, and No More Blues!

While we always like to be the first with a big ice cream story, I thought I would hold off because this is the perfect July Fourth flavor.

Of course, Edy's® describes their ice cream the best:
At Edy's®, we have a history of lifting spirits. In 1929, we introduced a new flavor of ice cream to bring a smile to people during the dark days of the Great Depression. That flavor was Rocky Road. Now 80 years later, we’re at it again. To brighten the summer, Edy's is proud to unveil a new Slow Churned® Light Ice Cream Limited Edition Flavor: Red, White & No More Blues! Creamy vanilla ice cream with fruity swirls of blueberry and strawberry throughout!
Who knew that Edy's® invented Rocky Road -- to lift spirits in the Great Depression, nonetheless!

Visit their site for uplifting stories of how people made lemonade out of lemons -- er, um, ice cream out of eggs, cream, and sugar. And finally read the story of the $100,000 winner of their Taste of Recovery Contest.

I have yet to try it, but it sounds wonderful -- and very summery!

Happy Fourth of July!

Happy Fourth of July!

Trying to find some super cool Independence Day Ice Cream treats for you, and it has been quite a struggle.

I found a couple to get you in the mood though...

Thinking frozen treats and red, white, and blue, the first thing that comes to mind is being about seven years old, standing in line at the Washington Monument, and Mom and Dad buying us those rocket pops from a vendor. . What a treat! It certainly made the line go faster (or at least it seemed...) I also remember thinking how cool it was that our popsicle mimicked the monument ahead of us It looks like it is a Blue Bunny treat that we had: Bomb Pop, Jr.: cherry, lime and blue raspberry on a stick! Added bonus? I just found a Blue Bunny coupon! Yay!

On my search for Rocket Pops, I also found them called Firecracker Pops as well as the Blue Bunny Bomb Pops. Though Firecracker Pops aren't exactly the treats we had, but they look pretty close as well -- I am sure though, in 1986, our treats did not have an exploding candy top. I would have remembered that! A search on Google also brought up a listing of tons of recipes to make your own "rocket pops."

I am headed up to Concord, Vermont for the fourth, but if I were home, I certainly would be making these little fellas from BakeSpace. How cute!

Have a great fourth of July -- full of frozen treats!
