Cone-a-versary and a Giveaway!

There are many stories about the invention of the ice cream cone, but we like the one that causes the 108th anniversary to be today!

From the Library of Congress Today in History: On "July 23, 1904, according to some accounts, Charles E. Menches conceived the idea of filling a pastry cone with two scoops of ice-cream and thereby invented the ice-cream cone."

As you know, I love the smell (and taste!) of Ben & Jerry's cones. To celebrate this anniversary and such a great cone, we are giving away a copy of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book as well as a coupon for a free pint of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream! (Although you'll have to forgive the fact that the book does not actually share Ben & Jerry's recipe for their cones!)

Leave a comment about your favorite cone by Friday, July 27 for a chance to win! Email MUST be included with your comment (in the comment field) -- otherwise we will be unable to contact you!

Happy Ice Cream Cone Day!

When you walk into a Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop, they can't pull you in with the smell of ice cream. What smell? Exactly. There's another smell that permeates the air and once I smell it, it screams Ben & Jerry's to me: the waffle cone. When I visited Ben & Jerry's, we had our hand at making waffle cones and waffle bowls -- but we just made the waffles in the iron and shaped them into cones and bowls. Amanda had already made the batter. Darn her! I wanted that recipe. Just so my house could smell like a B&J Scoop Shop on a daily basis! (Hmmmm, marketing idea for B&J...a waffle cone candle -- and I don't even usually like to burn candles. But I'd burn this one!)

I could go into the history of ice cream cones, but it seems like this site and Wikipedia have got us covered. Wikipedia also lists the varieties of cones, including: "waffle cones, cake cones (or wafer cones), pretzel cones, sugar cones and chocolate-coated cones."

What would we do without cones or and the variations they have spawned? Here are a few ice cream cone creations, modifications, and a squirrelly little story about ice cream cones to whet your appetite and perhaps send you out for an ice cream cone to celebrate a very special day: Ice Cream Cone Day.

Emack & Bolio's Flavored Cone
Photo from their website
  • Emack & Bolio's claims to have invented the "flavored cone." From their website: "Emack & Bolio’s invented the flavored cone in 1980 and have been improving on the concept ever since. Making the perfect accessory to our Super Premium Ice Cream, there is a large selection to choose from. Looking for something different? Try our Marsh”mellow covered cones with your choice of Oreos, Rice Krispies, Fruit Loops, or Fruity Pebbles! If you are a fan of rainbow or chocolate jimmies we have cones that are dipped in chocolate and then rolled in this delicious topping. If you are feeling a little nuts, we have a cones that are rolled in a mix of them! Chocolate dipped waffle cones also look great rolled in shaved coconut. No matter which one you choose, you can’t go wrong!" Certainly sounds like you "can't go wrong!" Good invention, E&B!
  • In Sea Isle City, New Jersey, at Yum Yum's Ice Cream, the signature gum drop that is placed at the bottom of each ice cream cone keeps the ice cream from dripping out the hole at the bottom of a sugar cone. Genius!
  • In college, the only food you could easily take out of our dining hall was a soft serve ice cream in a wafer cone, since the cone was the "disposable" dish they didn't mind us taking. I was never a fan of wafer cones, but the sugar cone dripped (no gum drops for us!) so wafer cone it was for me and many of my peers. One day I was with my roommate in the Admissions Building when we looked outside to see a squirrel holding someone's discarded ice cream cone between his paws, munching away.

Happy Halloween Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

I was super excited to see these ice cream cone cupcakes by Life's a Cupcake at one of the Halloween parties I went to this past weekend. It of course was the first thing I noticed amongst all the treats and the first thing every kid wanted. What's better than cupcake that looks like ice cream! After giving one to my 6 year old and 2 year old I realized this really is a great idea. The cone takes the mess out of cupcakes and is still fun for the kids to eat. Oh and the cute little chocolate pumpkin was the icing on the cake!

I have to give props to Jen from Life's a Cupcake. She is a friend of a friend who has two little ones and recently decided to turn her love for baking into a fun little local business. She is not only a great baker but super creative and adds fun detail and thought into all her creations. She made the Pumpkin cupcakes you can see in the background as well as awesome Frankenstein chocolate cupcakes. If you happen to live in Southern MA or northern RI definitely check her out. Thanks Jen for the fun cupcakes. Can't wait for Tarah to have another party so I can do some more taste testing!

Oh Violet has to have one of these! How fun is Etsy just to surf around and see the amazing creations people are making. This shirt is so precious and perfect for the little girly girl on your list. Chic Baby Rose out of California is designing these super cute ice cream long sleeved T's and the fun part is that you can customize the flavor by choosing what color tulle to top the cone off with. Love it!!! And if anything just go check out the other goods she makes. The hats, tutus, and dresses are so amazingly cute and just fun to look at!

A Video Starring Ice Cream!

So here at Scoopalicious, we try to find ice cream exposed in all types of media. My sister, Arianna, sent me this video: J Dilla's Nothing Like This...watch it through or skip ahead to 1:44 in the video, and you'll see why , on Arianna's suggestion, I posted it.

I have to say, I am not familiar with the late J Dilla, but anyone who puts oversized walking ice cream cones in his videos is OK in my book. Oh, and he has an album called Donuts...sweet fans unite!
